Primary Reception to Year 5 The primary room caters for students attending private or independent schools. Students may be from rural, metropolitan, interstate or overseas schools. Siblings of hospital patients from rural areas can also attend the school. The classroom is open from 9.30am-11.30am and from 1.30pm-3.30pm Monday to Friday. The classroom provides a safe, healthy and fun learning environment so that continuity of education and well being is acheived for all our students. Some students may have resources and a curriculum from their own school. A learning program is negotiated with all students so that they can work at their own level using the SACSA Framework as the basis to teach the important essential learnings. The school is well resourced and teachers will often communicate with a student's teacher/school. The morning sessions are usually for students to learn literacy and numeracy skills. Some group lessons occur in the afternoon sessions eg; cooking, science, technology, PE, SOCE, drama and art. The classroom has 4 up-to-date computers and there is access to laptops, particualy for students in beds and wheelchairs. Primary staff also visit students on the wards, fascilitating learning and links to the students home schools. A mid morning break of fruit-time encourages social interaction and healthy eating.
Middle Schooling and Senior Secondary Years 6 to 12 Learning is a life long process and curriculum access during periods of illness is important to enhance student well being and optimism. The teachers in the secondary classroom liaise with home schools, set challanging tasks to engage students in relevant learning and build positive relationships. The teaching team works with short term and long term patients, their siblings and out patients by negotiation. Programming and planning using the mandated SACSA Framework and the Essential Learnings eg; Thinking, Identity, Communication, Interdependence and Futures ensures seamless learning opportunities for students while at HES and during the transition process from hospital to home to school.
Resource Centre The resource centre has an up-to-date collection of fiction and non-fiction books. We have many of the texts currently used by schools. Resources can be borrowed while students are in hospital. Teaching staff also borrow laptops for students to use on the wards. The librarian works with individual or groups of students as required. Every year we celebrate Book Week by promoting the short listed books and conducting special activities. Teachers from student's home schools can ring (8161 7262) to check whether we have a specific text/novel that their student may need.
